Hi all,

Here's the second part of the pike place market shots from Sunday. For the camera technical folks in the house, I shot all of these using a 100mm macro f/2.8, and usually on the f/2.8 setting. That is one fun lens. :)

Gasworks KAP - Closer this time

Hi all,

On Saturday I took my kite rig out and went and flew at Gasworks Park. I was able to get much closer to the old structures than the last time I was out, and have shots of that. I was trying to get closer, but the wind wasn't quite in the right direction.

In this image in particular you can see that my camera was fairly low over the gas works.

Finally, at one point during the day the wind shifted and my kite began to fall out of the sky fairly rapidly. I grabbed the string and ran, but my camera hit the ground and tumbled along for a while. The kite, camera, and KAP rig are all fine, here's an image the camera captured during the tumble. :)

The Evening Sky

For a very brief time this evening, the setting sun illuminated the very tops of the clouds. This wasn't visible below the dense cloud cover, but it did create a diffuse light purple light across the sky, barely noticeable unless you happened to take a picture of it.

The actual effect was more subtle, I'm surprised my camera recorded this deep of a purple. It was really more like a lavender. :)

The last image is from the bus tunnel in the Westlake station. I was going after a sort of "Dark City" kind of mood, I think I at least partially succeeded.

I'm now a volunteer for the Seattle Architecture Foundation, and I've been assigned to shoot several buildings in the ID. I went out tonight to do that, and came back with the following.

As you might be able to guess, King Street Station was one of the buildings. :)

KAP at SLU and Myrtle Edwards Park

Today was a beautiful day. There was a nice breeze, and the sun was out. Suddenly it clouded up and the light levels dropped....right before I decided to out and try to KAP. Bah.

I first went to South Lake Union. The wind was good, the light was still decent, but the waterfront park there is a bad place to KAP, as planes from Kenmore Air are flying in and landing on the lake, and my kite was in danger of getting hit and taken away from me. So I called up Kenmore Air and said, "hey, I'm flying a kite here, let your pilots know," and they said, "our pilots are too busy worrying about what is happening on the water to care about a kite," and I'm all like, "srsly, my kite is in your flight path if you're not careful," and they're all like, "it's fine, if a plane hits a kite, it'll just take the kite with it. Finally I'm like, "ok, I'm calling you to let you know. If you don't think it's a problem, then so be it, but at least I called you to let you know." Two more planes flew really damn close to my kite after that, then I decided I didn't think it was a good idea any more, so I brought my kite down.

Here's the single picture I got, which is kind of meh.

I will not be returning to the SLU park to do KAP. Way too problematic with the planes.

So then I went over to Myrtle Edwards Park. It was getting a little too dark by then, but I did get the following shot. I had to photoshop it in order to bring it up, the image that I captured was pretty dark. It's okay, but very grainy as a result.

Compositionally it's a much better image.

Burning Man 2009 - 14 of Many - Last Burning Man Set

And that's it folks. These are the last of the Burning man photos for this year.

First we have: the damage that the heavy winds did to the makeshift pillows we ziptied to the top of our poles to prevent the shade cloth from destroying itself:

A very dusty image of myself in Klamath Falls before taking a shower. (Previous shower had been two days previous, and I had spent time in a serious dust storm between then and the time this image was taken.

Burning Man 2009 - 12 of Many

On Saturday night of Burning Man, the Burning Man was Burned, this is called Burning the Man. Despite this, and the name of the event, Burning the Man may act as a compass, or point of reference for Burning Man, but is not the point, and not the high point, of Burning Man.

Although it did produce some good images. :)

After the man burned, I wandered around that evening and photographed some art, and the temple, which this year was named "Fire of Fires."
